One of my personal soapboxes
is to rail against the pressure within our education system to specialise ever-earlier.
At 13 I had to drop some subjects, at 16 I had to essentially choose between Science
and Arts curricula. I went on to a Science and Technology College, which was enlightened
enough to not only encourage intercourse (!) with local arts colleges (Royal College
of Music and Royal College of Art especially) on adjoining campuses but enforced
at least one Humanities course unit each year counting towards the final degree
result. I was also lucky enough to have a family with varied interests in arts
and culture.
